Module 4

In your blog post:

1) Summarize the section from chapter 20;
2) Summarize what you learned during your self-guided research; and
3) Relate what you’ve learned from both of those activities to the world we live in today. Some people say that fascist tendencies seem to be on the rise in parts of the world today… do you agree? If so, in what ways do contemporary trends demonstrate fascist tendencies? If not, what key elements of fascism would you need to see evidence of in order to say that this is an accurate claim?
The section on fascism in chapter 20 gives us a look into how fascism played in Europe specifically Italy and Germany. In Italy, following the Russian Revolution, people in the middle and upper class viewed communism and socialism as a threat to their independence and looked to fascism as a better option for their circumstances. The end of the First World War left many people unemployed and resentful about the amount of land gained from the Treaty of Versailles. The aftermath of the First World War hit trade unions, peasants, communist and socialist in Italy especially hard. In 1922 Benito Mussolini rose to power. Mussolini’s reign was accompanied with much violence and terror carried out by his private army called the Black Shirts. With the promise of social reform, Mussolini suspended democracy, labor unions, opposing political parties, imprisoned, deported, and even weren’t as far as killing his opponents. Propaganda in Italy portrayed women solely in domestic roles with little to no equality. Germany’s fascist interoperation was very similar to Italy’s. The end of World War I also left the German government broken. Adolf Hitler became the chancellor of Germany and the leader of their fascist movement in 1933 with he help of his army called the Nazi’s. Due to the Weimar’s government inability to recover from the effects of the Great Depression. Unlike Mussolini, Hitler put a big focus on racial superiority having intense hatred for Jews and communism. Another one of Hitler’s major goals was to save Germany from the ties of the Treaty of Versailles. Similar to Mussolini, Hitler got rid of all other political parties, labor unions, and imprisoned their opponents. Propaganda during this time portrayed Jews in a very negative light and portrayed them as a thing that went against German culture. However, Hitler was successful in bringing Germany out of the Depression.

Fascism is a form of government that is a one person authoritative dictatorship. This form of government became prominent in the 20th century especially during World War I. Fascism is commonly associated with German and Italian regimes and their dictators Mussolini and Hitler. Fascism’s main goal is to strengthen a nation and make it more powerful at any means. To be a fascists means having allegiance to the nation, and master group/race.

I agree that fascist tendencies are on the rise in parts of the world today. For example, the president Donald Trump has consistently shown his dislike for women and people of color. Most of his followers have taken it upon themselves to publicly show their ignorance and discrimination in support of him since his presidency.
